Without any doubt, the answer is, “Yes”. Some of my clients have already been and discussed their concerns with their GP. Others prefer to have a consultation first and then I can work with them to get the most from their GP appointment.

Hair loss as a primary condition is not covered by the NHS and is viewed as “cosmetic”. But it can be a symptom of other underlying medical conditions so your GP will usually be willing to investigate initially. If the underlying health condition can be treated and the hair loss issue resolves, that’s perfect. Unfortunately if tests come back as normal or a health concern is treated but the hair loss persists, then the GP may take the view they’ve done as much as they can. After all, they are not hair loss specialists and treatments for hair loss are not usually available on the NHS.

Scalp problems are different. The cause is often clearly within the remit of a GP – infection, auto-immune or stress-related. But unfortunately treatments offer management of the condition, not a cure – which can lead to chronic conditions which flare up and recur. Even if the GP makes a dermatology referral where symptoms are persistent or severe, waiting times for this type of non-urgent NHS consultation can run into years and then tend to focus on high strength medication. I have found that specialist trichological scalp treatments can be very effective in relieving scaly, itchy or unsightly conditions when used to complement rather than replace topical treatments, steroids and antibiotics from your doctor/dermatologist.

If you are suffering, then the most important thing is to get an accurate diagnosis from a reputable trichologist as quickly as possible. Only then can you set about finding a solution. I have the specifically hair and scalp related knowledge and experience, as well as the time in a consultation, to properly explore and identify the problem, investigate the causes, and work with you as an individual to find a treatment plan that’s right for you. When I’ve diagnosed a problem, I will always refer you back to your GP for treatment if this can be provided via the NHS. I am always conscious of working with other medical professionals and specialists to give you the best and most cost-effective treatment and care possible.

In some circumstances, waiting can mean that the effects of a condition become permanent and will only leave options for added hair pieces or wigs. Ideally I want to help you resolve the problem before it gets to this stage. If you think you have hair or scalp issues, please do not delay in contacting me. Find out about a consultation here.
