Consultation Types Explained

Full Adult Consultation – face-to-face (£150)

Lasting for up to an hour in one of my private clinics in Leicester, Chellaston or Retford, this is the best choice for a first appointment. The main advantage is that I can properly examine your hair and scalp – it’s appearance and feel. I like to use my magnifier and trichoscope (specialist scalp camera and high power magnifier) to support my diagnosis. This is not possible with an online consultation. This close up examination ensures all possible diagnoses have been considered, and is essential if certain conditions, such as androgenetic alopecias (male and female pattern hair loss) are to be accurately diagnosed or eliminated as a cause.

What to expect from your consultation:

  • An opportunity to discuss your hair or scalp concern with a qualified specialist who cares and understands (me! I don’t delegate your consultation to anyone else)

  • A detailed personal and medical history with diet and lifestyle which impact on hair loss conditions. .

  • Evaluation of your pre-consultation questionnaire and photos prior to your consultation

  • A thorough, full examination of your hair and scalp. Including photographic images and sometimes hair samples being taken, and the scalp being looked at under magnification, with images taken for future comparison.

  • Diagnosis or preliminary diagnosis with a clear explanation. Further investigation, blood work or the results of tests may be needed to confirm a diagnosis. This is discussed on an individual basis depending on need.

  • All treatment options discussed and questions answered. A full personalised treatment plan explained and agreed according to your needs. Advice on nutrition, supplements and hair care, product advice and recommendations. There is never any expectation or pressure to take the advice offered or use products suggested.

  • A written summary of the key points discussed in the consultation. Response to queries.

  • Independent advice and referral to other specialists as necessary. I will also liaise with other experts where this is desirable eg your GP.

Online Adult Consultation via video link (£120)

An online consultation is held remotely via Teams, Zoom, Skype or similar. It is perfect for anyone needing the help of an expert trichologist wherever they are in the UK or abroad or if there are other difficulties meeting in person such as health issues.

You can enjoy the same benefits as for a face-to-face consultation, but from the comfort of your own armchair. The only difference is that a full, detailed physical examination of your hair and scalp is not possible. I can still see your hair and you can send photos, but I am unable to fully evaluate its appearance and feel, and am unable to use my magnifier and trichoscope (specialist scalp camera and high power magnifier), without which it is impossible to spot or accurately diagnose some conditions. There are no “before and after” images for comparison later.

All other aspects of an online consultation are equally as thorough as an in-person consultation.

If you are able to attend a full adult consultation in person, this is by far the best option.

Follow-up Consultation - £75 (within 12 months)

This follow-up usually takes place about 4-6 months after our initial meeting, because this tends to be the best time to check on progress. Evaluating the success of treatment earlier is usually pointless since it takes this long for new and healthier hair to grow. Indeed, whilst I can often see new hair with the magnifier sooner, it often takes 12 months before the full impact of successful treatment is obvious.

What to expect from a follow-up consultation

  • Ideally this is a face-to-face consultation although some clients access the appointment via video link. It lasts for up to 30 minutes.

  • Careful examination of your hair and scalp (if face to face).

  • Confirm the initial diagnosis.

  • Take new camera and trichoscope images and compare them to those taken previously.

  • Evaluate effectiveness of treatment and modify treatment plan and advice accordingly.

  • Discuss the best way forward depending on results and prognosis for the future. I will liaise with other specialists as needed.
